The Indian Navy’s INS Sarvekshak has successfully completed a significant hydrographic survey in Mauritius, covering an area of over 25,000 square nautical miles. The official handover of the survey data occurred on January 23, 2025, with the High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, Anurag Srivastava, presenting the fair sheet and nautical charts to President Dharambeer Gokhool. This event represents a key milestone in the maritime cooperation between India and Mauritius.

Importance of the Hydrographic Survey
The primary goal of the hydrographic survey is to enhance Mauritius’ maritime infrastructure. The newly developed nautical charts will play a crucial role in resource management and planning for coastal development. This initiative highlights the strong partnership between India and Mauritius, and it is also aligned with India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) initiative, which emphasizes regional security and development.
Capabilities of INS Sarvekshak
INS Sarvekshak is outfitted with cutting-edge hydrographic survey equipment, including sonar systems and various survey boats. The ship also features a helicopter and a Bofors 40 mm gun, which add to its operational flexibility, making it an essential asset for both maritime surveys and security tasks.
Bilateral Defense Cooperation
India and Mauritius share a broad defense partnership, with Mauritius having an International Liaison Officer stationed at India’s Information Fusion Centre. Mauritius also operates radar centers as part of a joint coastal surveillance network, reinforcing regional maritime security.
Capacity Building Initiatives
India has been focused on strengthening its capacity-building efforts in the Indian Ocean region to boost the capabilities of littoral states. Over the past five years, the Indian Navy has conducted joint surveys covering a total of 89,000 square kilometers, producing 96 new nautical charts.
Prospects for Future Collaboration
The successful completion of this survey paves the way for further joint initiatives in maritime security. The partnership is expected to grow, with an emphasis on sustainable development and resource management. Given Mauritius’ strategic location in the Indian Ocean, the collaboration holds great potential for future cooperation.
